The Beginning of Greg’s Career in Optometry
Greg Luke began his journey in optometry during an era when optical practitioners were equal parts clinical diagnosticians and precision artisans. Armed with a deep interest in human vision, optics physics, and mechanical precision, Greg completed his qualifications with a commitment to providing personalized, unhurried eyecare.
From his earliest days in clinical practice, Greg recognized that prescription lenses were only as effective as the craftsmanship behind their fitting. He spent countless hours in optical workshops mastering lens grinding, hand-edging glass, and adjusting custom frame geometry.
Early optometry required meticulous hand calculations for complex astigmatisms and prism corrections. Greg developed a reputation for solving challenging optical prescriptions that standard dispensers struggled to fit.
Establishing and Operating the Original Medioptics Practice
Seeking to create a practice rooted in thorough examinations and high-quality optical dispensing, Greg established the original Medioptics practice in Coffs Harbour.
Under Greg’s independent ownership, Medioptics became a trusted household name across the Coffs Coast. Greg personally designed the practice laboratory, equipping it with advanced edging machinery so that patient glasses could be surfaced, cut, fitted, and checked on-site under his direct supervision.
Greg operated Medioptics with a focus on clinical integrity and genuine care. He refused to compromise on spectacle fitting, ensuring that every pair of frames handed to a patient felt comfortable, aligned perfectly, and provided crystal-clear vision.
Longstanding Connection with Patients & Coffs Harbour
For over three decades, Greg cared for multiple generations of Coffs Harbour families. It was common for Greg to examine children, their parents, and their grandparents within the same family line.
His gentle, patient-centered approach made him a familiar and comforting figure in local healthcare. Whether conducting routine eye health assessments, managing complex prescription changes, or carefully repairing a favorite pair of glasses, Greg earned the enduring trust of the Coffs Coast community.

Spectacle Making, Dispensing & Problem-Solving
What set Greg apart throughout his long career was his hands-on dedication to optical craftsmanship. While many practices outsourced lens glazing to commercial laboratories, Greg maintained an active laboratory bench.
He took immense pride in shaping high-index lenses, adjusting bridge alignments, repairing delicate hinges, and resolving optical anomalies that required custom adjustments. To Greg, spectacle making is both a precise science and a physical craft.

Selling the Practice & A New Phase
In 2019, after more than three decades of operating Medioptics, Greg decided to sell the practice to new owners.
Following the sale, Greg stepped away completely from Medioptics ownership and practice management. Medioptics continues to operate under its current independent ownership team. Greg’s transition marked the conclusion of his era with that brand, allowing him to step back and reflect on his next chapter in local eyecare.
Passing Experience & Craftsmanship to Chloe Luke
When Greg’s daughter, Chloe Luke, established Lens Lounge Eyecare at 372 Harbour Drive, Coffs Harbour, Greg was delighted to lend his four decades of optical knowledge to support her new independent practice.
Today, Greg works behind the scenes at Lens Lounge Eyecare, specializing in spectacle making, laboratory glazing, custom frame adjustments, and technical problem-solving. This collaboration brings Greg’s longstanding optical craftsmanship directly into the next generation of family eyecare.
